Chương trình này áp dụng năng lực tìm kiếm trên web của Google cho dữ liệu cục bộ, gần như chạy hoàn toàn trong trình duyệt. Bạn có thể đặt ô tìm kiếm của tiện ích này ở thanh tác vụ hay trên desktop, và từ đó thực hiện tìm kiếm trên web cũng như file cục bộ.
Google Desktop Search làm việc với các kiểu file Microsoft Office, nhạc, hình và các kiểu file khác, thậm chí nó còn có thể tìm nội dung chat của AOL Instant Message. Nhưng chương trình lại bỏ qua các kiểu file Rich Text Format, nén, XML và các kiểu file thông dụng khác, tuy nhiên bạn có thể tải về thư viện bổ sung để tìm các định dạng này.
